Verdict: Surfshark wins 5–4 (1 draw)
This is the closest battle on the site. Surfshark wins on intro price, unlimited devices, EU-based operating company and its free-trial option; NordVPN wins on audit history, network size, extra privacy servers and payment options. If you’re a household with many devices on a budget, Surfshark is the easy pick. If you want the longer audit track record and more advanced privacy servers, pick NordVPN.
Family ties, explained
In February 2022, Nord Security and Surfshark announced a merger. Both brands operate independently — separate apps, server fleets, pricing and audit programmes — but they share an owner. That matters if you’re choosing one specifically to avoid the other’s corporate group: you can’t.

Tally: Surfshark 5 (rounds 2, 4, 6, 7, 9) – NordVPN 4 (1, 5, 8, 10), 1 draw (3).
Round 1: Audits — NordVPN
Both use Deloitte and the ISAE 3000 standard. NordVPN’s sixth engagement (Deloitte Lithuania, 10 November–12 December 2025) followed engagements in 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024, and covered standard, Double VPN, Onion over VPN, obfuscated and P2P servers. Surfshark’s second Deloitte no-logs assurance report was released on 16 June 2025, following its first in 2023, and covered standard, static and multiport servers. Both reports are available to logged-in customers. NordVPN’s longer series wins.
Round 2: Jurisdiction — Surfshark
Surfshark B.V. is registered in Amsterdam (KvK 81967985), so it sits directly under the GDPR and Dutch law. NordVPN’s service entity is in Panama, which has no mandatory data-retention law for VPNs, while its parent Nord Security is in the Netherlands. For EU readers who value direct GDPR accountability, Surfshark takes it; readers who prefer an offshore entity may score this the other way.
Round 3: Security features — Draw
Both offer kill switches, WireGuard-based protocols, ad/malware blocking and multi-hop. NordVPN’s specialty servers (Onion over VPN, obfuscated) and Surfshark’s Rotating IP and Dynamic MultiHop are different flavours of the same idea. Surfshark says it runs RAM-only servers; NordVPN has also said it moved its servers to RAM-only operation. Draw.
Round 4: Track record — Surfshark
NordVPN disclosed in October 2019 that a single server in a Finnish data centre had been accessed in March 2018 through a remote-management account the data-centre provider had installed; NordVPN said no activity logs or credentials were exposed, ended the relationship and expanded audits. We found no comparable incident publicly reported for Surfshark.
Round 5: Network — NordVPN
Surfshark states 4,500+ servers in 100 countries; NordVPN states thousands of servers across 225+ locations. Both are provider claims. NordVPN’s larger stated footprint wins.
Round 6: Devices — Surfshark
Unlimited vs 10. For families or anyone with a phone, laptop, tablet, TV stick and partner’s devices, this is Surfshark’s biggest advantage.
Rounds 7–8: Price — split
Official pricing pages, 30 October 2026 (USD as displayed; euro prices at checkout; VAT may apply):
| Plan | Intro | Paid up front | Term | Renews at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surfshark Starter (2-year) | $2.49/mo | $67.23 | 27 months | “applicable renewal price” (not shown) |
| Surfshark One (2-year, Black Friday) | $2.49/mo | $67.23 | 27 months | not shown |
| Surfshark One+ (2-year) | $3.99/mo | $107.73 | 27 months | not shown |
| NordVPN Basic (2-year) | $3.49/mo | $94.23 | 27 months | $139.08/year |
| NordVPN Complete (2-year) | $3.99/mo | $107.73 | 27 months | $219.48/year |
Surfshark is $27 cheaper up front for the same term. NordVPN wins the renewal round only because it shows the renewal price clearly on the pricing page — we’ll update when we can verify Surfshark’s renewal figure from an official source. Tip: set a calendar reminder a month before any renewal.
Surfshark’s Black Friday offer currently gives Surfshark One (VPN + antivirus + Alert + more) at the Starter price, which makes the bundle unusually good value right now. See our sister deals hub for live, dated deal checks.
Round 9: Refund & trial — Surfshark
Both have 30-day money-back guarantees. Surfshark also mentions a 7-day free trial (used on up to 3 devices during the trial, per its FAQ) on eligible sign-ups.
Round 10: Payment privacy — NordVPN
NordVPN lists many cryptocurrencies plus retail prepaid cards that can be paid in cash. That gives it the edge for anonymous payment.
