The short answer

The cheapest VPN headline price isn’t the cheapest VPN. Renewal prices can double or triple your cost from year three. Ranked by realistic three-year cost from official prices:

How we ranked them

  1. Price data comes only from each provider’s official pricing page on the date above. No coupon codes, no third-party “exclusive” prices.
  2. We add the first payment to one renewal to show what a typical three-year subscriber actually pays.
  3. A provider only makes the list if it has a credible, independent check of its privacy claims or a strong public track record (see how we judge).
  4. Speed and streaming aren’t scored, because we don’t publish in-house tests yet.

1. Private Internet Access — lowest long-term cost

PIA’s top offer was $2.03/month on a 3-year + 3-month plan, with the page stating it auto-renews at $79 every 3 years; the 1-year plan was $3.99/month ($47.88 billed yearly, renewing at the same $47.88). That keeps the long-term cost unusually flat. PIA advertises unlimited simultaneous devices and a 100% open-source VPN on its plans page, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. It’s owned by Kape Technologies (also owner of ExpressVPN and CyberGhost) and is US-based, which some privacy-focused readers will weigh against it.

Best for: the lowest total spend if you’re comfortable with a US-based provider. See PIA prices →

2. Proton VPN Plus — best value for privacy

$3.49/month on the 2-year plan ($83.76 up front), renewing at $83.88 per year. Swiss-based, open-source apps, annual Securitum no-logs audit (2025 report on-site in Zürich), 10 devices, Secure Core. Plus a free plan if you want to try before paying. Read our Proton VPN review.

3. ExpressVPN Basic — cheap start, moderate renewal

$2.99/month for 28 months ($83.72), then $99.95 per year. Basic now includes ad, malicious-site and adult-site blocking and 10 devices. KPMG assessed its TrustedServer no-logs controls as of February 2025. Higher tiers (Advanced $4.49/mo, Pro $7.49/mo) add password manager, identity tools and more devices.

4. Mullvad — no tricks, ever

€5/month flat, whether you pay for one month or ten years, VAT included. No sales, no renewal jump, 10% off when paying with crypto. Over three years it costs more than the long-plan intro deals, but it never surprises you and you can stop any month. 5 devices, 14-day refund (not for cash).

5. NordVPN Basic — feature-rich, pricier renewal

$3.49/month for 27 months ($94.23), renewing at $139.08/year. You get six Deloitte no-logs assurance engagements (latest 2025), 10 devices and specialty servers, but the renewal makes it the most expensive base VPN here over three years. The 1-year plan was $4.99/month ($74.85 for 15 months).

Surfshark Starter — cheapest up front (renewal unverified)

$2.49/month for 27 months: $67.23, the lowest first payment here, with unlimited devices. Surfshark’s page says renewal is at the “applicable renewal price” but didn’t display the figure when we checked, so we can’t calculate a verified three-year cost. Its Black Friday offer currently includes the Surfshark One bundle at the Starter price.

How to keep a cheap VPN cheap

  1. Pay for the long term only if you’re sure. Use the 30-day refund window (14 days at Mullvad) to check it works for you.
  2. Put the renewal date in your calendar for a month before it renews.
  3. Turn off auto-renew right after buying if you plan to shop around (you keep access until the term ends).
  4. Contact support before renewal. Some providers offer retention discounts — not guaranteed.
  5. Watch seasonal sales: Black Friday/Cyber Monday and New Year are the usual low points. Our sister deals tracker records dated prices.

Cheap vs free: what you give up

Free plans from reputable providers (Proton VPN Free) limit you to fewer servers and devices. Unknown free VPN apps are a different story: researchers and regulators have repeatedly found free VPN apps with excessive permissions or data-sharing. If the product is free and the company is anonymous, you’re paying another way.

FAQ

Cheapest decent VPN? PIA on long-term cost; Surfshark on the 2-year up-front price.

Why the price jump at renewal? Intro discounts end; check the renewal price before buying.

Are free VPNs worth it? Only from reputable, audited providers.
