Verdict

Proton VPN is our top all-round pick for privacy-conscious Europeans. It combines a respected Swiss legal home, open-source apps, a recurring on-site no-logs audit and a free plan that’s genuinely usable — something almost no other major VPN offers. The main drawbacks are the price jump after the first term and the need for a Proton account (email) rather than anonymous sign-up.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Swiss jurisdiction outside the EU-US data-retention debates, with an EU adequacy decision.
  • Recurring independent no-logs audits with a public report.
  • Open-source apps anyone can inspect.
  • Free plan with no data cap and no ads.
  • Secure Core multi-hop and Stealth protocol for restrictive networks.
  • 10 devices on Plus.

Cons

  • Renewal price roughly doubles the effective monthly cost of the 2-year intro deal.
  • Requires an email-based Proton account (Mullvad needs none).
  • Free plan: 1 device, randomly selected countries, “medium” speed per Proton.
  • No cash payment directly (cash only via Proton credits).

Privacy and audits

Proton commissions Securitum to audit its no-logs policy every year. In the 2025 engagement, two senior consultants worked on-site at Proton’s Zürich office (18–20 August 2025), inspected randomly selected live servers with Proton engineers, and reviewed the configuration of services handling user traffic. The report states:

  • Proton does not track or log user activity on its production VPN servers.
  • User-attributable connection metadata — source IP, connection timestamps, session duration, DNS queries — is not logged.
  • Only anonymised aggregate data (device OS type, connections per country, protocol used) is collected for operations.
  • Proton runs its own DNS resolvers (Knot Resolver with DNSSEC validation).

Proton also states its apps are 100% open source. Together, that’s one of the most transparent setups among major VPNs.

Jurisdiction

Proton AG is headquartered in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva. Switzerland isn’t in the EU but has its own revised data-protection law (revFADP) and an EU adequacy decision. Swiss authorities can compel providers through legal process; Proton publishes a transparency report on legal requests. Because Proton VPN doesn’t log activity or user-attributable metadata (per the audit), there’s little to hand over.

Features

  • Secure Core: routes traffic first through hardened servers in privacy-friendly countries, then out through a second server — protecting against a compromised exit server.
  • NetShield: DNS-level blocking of ads, trackers and malware (Plus).
  • Kill switch (including a permanent option) and VPN Accelerator, which Proton says can speed connections by up to 400% on long-distance routes.
  • Stealth protocol: disguises VPN traffic on networks that block VPNs.
  • Protocols: WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, Stealth.
  • P2P/BitTorrent on Plus; streaming support on Plus.

Price and renewal

From Proton’s pricing page on 30 October 2026 (USD as displayed; eurozone buyers see euros at checkout):

  • Plus, monthly: $9.99.
  • Plus, 2-year: $3.49/month — billed $83.76 for the first 24 months, then $83.88 every 12 months.
  • Proton Unlimited (VPN + Mail + Drive + Pass + Calendar): $7.99/month on 2-year — $191.76 for 24 months, then $119.88/year.

Third-party sites have reported a lower Black Friday rate ($2.49/month). We couldn’t see it on the official pricing page when we checked; we’ll update this review if it appears.

Three-year cost estimate (Plus, 2-year + one renewal): $167.64. Compare with others in Best cheap VPN.

Payment options

Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, or Proton credits. Once you have an account, you can buy credits with cash, bank transfer or Bitcoin — a workable, if indirect, anonymous route.

Proton VPN vs alternatives

  • vs Mullvad: Mullvad is more anonymous (no email, cash) and never changes price; Proton has a free tier, more devices and Secure Core. Full battle.
  • vs NordVPN: NordVPN has a longer audit series and more specialty servers; Proton is Swiss, open source and has a free plan.
  • vs Surfshark: Surfshark has unlimited devices and a lower 2-year up-front price; Proton has the more transparent audit and open-source apps.

Who should skip Proton VPN

  • You want completely anonymous sign-up → Mullvad.
  • You need more than 10 devices → Surfshark (unlimited).
  • You want the lowest 3-year price → see Best cheap VPN.
