Verdict: 3–3 with 4 draws; Proton VPN takes it on the tie-break

This is a battle between two different ideas of trust. Proton VPN offers Swiss jurisdiction, open-source apps, a published renewal price that’s far lower than NordVPN’s, and a genuinely free plan. NordVPN offers the longest independent no-logs audit series of any big provider, a bigger country list and more ways to pay privately.

The rounds split 3–3. Under our method, ties are broken on the Privacy and Price rounds: privacy splits 1–1 (NordVPN on audits, Proton on jurisdiction), and price goes to Proton on renewal. So Proton VPN edges it, but if audit history is your top priority, NordVPN is the better pick for you.

Round 1: Privacy & audits — NordVPN

NordVPN has commissioned six independent no-logs assurance engagements from Deloitte since 2018; the most recent covered 10 November to 12 December 2025. Proton VPN is audited annually by Securitum, whose 2025 on-site audit found no user-activity logging or user-attributable metadata logging, and Proton’s apps are open source, so their code can be inspected by anyone. Both records are strong. NordVPN’s longer series gives it the round.

Round 2: Jurisdiction & ownership — Proton VPN

Proton AG is based in Geneva under Swiss law. Switzerland isn’t in the EU, but the European Commission recognises it as providing adequate data protection, and Proton publishes a transparency report of legal requests. NordVPN is operated by nordvpn S.A. in Panama, with its parent Nord Security headquartered in the Netherlands and an EEA representative in Amsterdam. For European users, Proton’s single, well-documented jurisdiction is easier to understand and gives it the round. NordVPN’s group also owns Surfshark, which matters if you want to diversify.

Round 3: Security features — Draw

Proton’s Secure Core routes traffic through hardened servers in privacy-friendly countries before it exits, and NetShield blocks ads, trackers and malware at DNS level; its Stealth protocol is built for restrictive networks. NordVPN answers with Double VPN, Onion over VPN, obfuscated servers, Threat Protection and Meshnet for reaching your own devices remotely. Different strengths, no clear winner.

Round 4: Track record — Draw

NordVPN disclosed in 2019 that one rented server in Finland was accessed in 2018 through an insecure remote-management system at the data centre; NordVPN said no user activity logs were exposed and ended the contract. Proton VPN has no comparable VPN incident that we found. But in 2021, Proton was compelled by Swiss authorities, acting on a French request, to log the IP address of a Proton Mail user, which Proton disclosed and explained. That involved the email service, not the VPN, and Proton says Swiss law doesn’t require it to log VPN users. Each record has one notable episode handled publicly, so we call it even.

Round 5: Network — NordVPN

NordVPN’s public server API listed 7,241 servers in 150 countries on 30 October 2026, including Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius. Proton claims 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries for paid plans. Proton claims more servers; NordVPN’s figure is publicly verifiable and covers more countries. We give NordVPN the round on verifiable country coverage.

Round 6: Devices & apps — Draw

Both allow 10 simultaneous devices on their paid plans, and both have apps for all major platforms. Proton Free covers one device.

Rounds 7–8: Price — Proton VPN on renewal

3-year cost (our calculation)$167.64 for 36 months$233.31 for 39 months

Official pricing pages, 30 October 2026, USD as shown to our EU connection; tax may apply. Proton’s page has a EUR option.

The intro round is a draw: same monthly rate, with NordVPN giving 3 extra months for $10.47 more. Renewal is clear: NordVPN costs about 66% more per year after the first term. Current offers in euros: cheapest VPN in euros.

Round 9: Refund & trial — Proton VPN

Both have a 30-day money-back guarantee. Proton’s terms require both the cancellation and the refund request within 30 days and exclude cash and bank-transfer payments. NordVPN has no free plan; it mentions a Google Play trial for first-time Android users. Proton VPN Free (unlimited data, 1 device, 10 countries) lets you try Proton’s apps indefinitely without paying, which wins the round.

Round 10: Payment privacy — NordVPN

NordVPN accepts cards, PayPal, digital wallets, several cryptocurrencies and prepaid cards bought with cash in retail stores. Proton accepts cards, PayPal, Bitcoin and cash. Both have private options; NordVPN offers more of them.
