Verdict
NordVPN is the safest “big-brand” choice if audit history matters most to you. It has commissioned six independent no-logs assurance engagements since 2018, publishes a large server network (its public API lists 7,241 servers in 150 countries), and packs in extras such as Double VPN, obfuscated servers and Meshnet. The trade-offs are a renewal price well above the intro deal, a 10-device cap and an offshore (Panama) service entity that some Europeans prefer and others don’t.

Pros and cons
Pros
- Six Deloitte no-logs assurance engagements, the longest recurring series we track.
- Big network with strong European coverage, including Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius and 329 servers in Germany.
- Specialty servers (Double VPN, Onion Over VPN, obfuscated, P2P) that are inside the audit scope.
- Meshnet for reaching your own devices remotely, kept after NordVPN reversed its planned shutdown in September 2025.
- Many payment options, including cryptocurrency.
Cons
- Renewal is much higher than the intro price ($139.08/yr for Basic vs $94.23 for the first 27 months).
- 10 devices, compared with unlimited at sister brand Surfshark.
- 2018 server incident (details below).
- Shares a parent company with Surfshark, if you’re trying to avoid one corporate group.
Privacy and audits
NordVPN’s privacy case rests on repetition. Deloitte Lithuania carried out the sixth no-logs assurance engagement under ISAE 3000 (Revised) between 10 November and 12 December 2025. It reviewed server infrastructure, configurations, deployment processes and technical logs across standard, Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and obfuscated servers, and concluded they matched NordVPN’s no-logs policy. Earlier engagements took place in 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024. Customers can read the reports in their Nord Account.
An assurance engagement is a snapshot of a defined period, not a permanent guarantee, but six of them in a row is a strong signal. See how this compares with other providers in our method.
Jurisdiction
- Service entity: nordvpn S.A., Panama. NordVPN says Panama has no mandatory data-retention law that applies to it.
- Parent: Nord Security, headquartered in the Netherlands. NordSec B.V. in Amsterdam is the EEA representative for GDPR requests, which is a practical plus for EU users who want to exercise data rights.
- Group: Nord Security and Surfshark announced a merger in 2022. The two brands run separate apps, servers and audits.
The 2018 incident
In October 2019 NordVPN disclosed that, in March 2018, one server it rented from a data centre in Finland had been accessed through an insecure remote-management system the data-centre provider had added without NordVPN’s knowledge. NordVPN said the server held no user activity logs and no usernames or passwords. It ended the contract, and later expanded its audits and moved to RAM-only servers. It’s worth knowing about. The way it was handled, followed by the audit series, is why it doesn’t sink the score.
Features
- NordLynx: NordVPN’s WireGuard-based protocol with a double-NAT layer, so no static internal IP is tied to a user. It’s the default and usually the fastest option (glossary: NordLynx).
- Threat Protection: blocks malicious sites and trackers. The full version with file scanning sits in the Complete plan; Basic includes the lighter DNS-based protection.
- Specialty servers: Double VPN, Onion Over VPN, obfuscated servers for restrictive networks, P2P servers and a paid dedicated IP add-on.
- Meshnet: links your devices into a private network so you can reach a home PC or NAS while away. NordVPN had announced a December 2025 shutdown, then reversed it on 29 September 2025 after user feedback.
- Kill switch and split tunnelling on the main platforms.
